SMA was approached to develop a plastic gauge face design that could be illuminated by a single tricolor LED and generate a color that could be easily spotted from a variety of directions and distances to indicate an out-of-specification temperature condition.  (Color is a much simpler indication of status than looking at the specific displayed temperatures.)  Once the specific offender was identified, the specific gauge reading could then be quickly remedied.  Various colors generated by the mixture of the three color LEDs would indicate the current status, or an imminent condition.  The photograph shows the result of the development.
